KAIKA TOKYO AWARD Grand Prize
Kyoko Shindo "drawing of one day"
<Comment from Mr. Yuji Akimoto>
Kyoko Shindo has consistently depicted the activities of people. At first glance, it looks like a light drawing because it draws with a water-containing pigment at the speed of writing, but it is a solid work that makes you imagine the social background and lifestyle of people. The people drawn in the drawing are those who were involved with Shindo. I met when Shindo was admitted to the hospital. Many are patients? I can't imagine the kind and symptoms of the illness from this drawing, but the people I met when I was going to the examination from the room or when I was casually spending time in the room. Aside from the degree of involvement with the Shindo, the appearance of the people drawn gives us a daily look at the hospital life. Human life is everywhere, and it may be the most important thing to protect. Until now, it was a matter of course, but it is a picture that makes us imagine such a thing. It's a diary style, a sketch style, or a light touch, but I can catch the eyes of the people and their facial expressions.
Akimoto Yushi Award
Seiko Kajiura "Rabbits Hearing Color"
<Comment from Mr. Yuji Akimoto>
A lovely white rabbit. Both ears stand sharply and limbs are long. Characterized like a costume. If this is a costume size that fits people as it is, it would still be within the scope of imagination (even if you think calmly, it would be pretty scary if a costume that contains people suddenly appears). However, I still accept Kajiura, and I see Kajiura's rabbit again. large. It is 4m. It's strange to come here. It is the point of this work that the cuteness of the facial expressions and this size contrast. The size sometimes creates an extraordinary feeling. Kajiura makes well-characterized animals. These are some sort of fantasy creatures that have come out of the story. Kajiura's work world is the story that they spin. This is something Kajiura cherishes. It seems that she is using nerves in the production process, perhaps because she is a writer who deals with difficult metals. There is a solid sense of modeling that can be seen through the work.
Noritaka Tatehana Award
Tomohiro Kato “iron-oxide painting “W.S./T****68””
<Comment by Noritaka Tatehana>
The portrait drawn by Tomohiro Kato emphasizes the presence of the person drawn by the emphasized materiality and draws in the viewer. However, the person depicted is a photograph of the arrested person called Mugshot, who can be found on the Internet, who has no acquaintance with the author. The sense of distance between the author and the subject, "drawing a stranger who really exists," gives the artist an originality in expressing the contemporary form of portraiture, which has been drawn for many years in art history. .. It may be that the fact that the photograph of the person that everyone can see on the Internet is processed and replaced with a mere material element by intentionally abstracting it is linked to the expression in iron oxide, which can be called the author's own medium. unknown. The completed work has a high quality that can be said to be a craft, as well as a three-dimensional expression with a mass that has never been seen in conventional painting expressions.
